You are a young child out shopping with your mother. You wander off and suddenly realise your mother is no longer there. This is a circumstance with which we can probably all identify. You experience fear – but of what? Most likely it is a fear of being lost but that fear could be assigned to anything. A kind lady with white hair may try to help. The child may assign the fear to her white hair and a strange phobia of people with white hair, or old people, is established.
How Does One Get a Fear of the Telecom Tower?
The client who came to me with a strange phobia of the Telecom Tower developed it following admission to a London hospital as a young child. Her parents were excluded and she believed she had been abandoned. As a young child she did not understand these feelings so she assigned the fear to the one thing that dominated her environment – a magnificent view of the Telecom Tower. As an adult she found it strange that the Telecom Tower created terrible fear but its real cause was hidden. Interestingly, if any member of her family were present the fear was greater and extended to any tall building.
Sometimes There is a Benefit to Escalating Fear
When someone already has a phobia it can make them more likely to develop another. When it occurs it is often that the original fear is not sufficiently effective for its designated purpose. I call this process “Phobia creep” and it can be one thing responsible for the development of strange phobias.
The phobia that develops is not always a strange phobia and often the source can be something other than the obvious. I have helped people with fear of flying: one who had developed it from a fear of success and another a fear of being alone. I also had a client who had “inherited” a fear of thunder and lightning from her war hero father who had suffered “shell shock” (now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) from bombardment during the Second World War.
It is possible to develop a phobia to anything – something strange or otherwise. There is generally a logical explanation that explains how any phobia has been created.
