What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition that stops your bowels working properly. The symptoms of IBS can be severe abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. IBS affects about 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men. Doctors do not know what goes wrong when someone suffers from IBS but the believe that the muscles that move digested food thorough ones intestine malfunction; either moving too quickly, too slowly, going into spasm or just fail to work in a coordinated way.
