Hypnotherapy to Overcome a Fear of Incontinence; being "Taken Short”
What is a Fear of Incontinence?
The fear of incontinence or of being "taken short” is something that many people experience but that is very rarely discussed. Maybe the increased advertising of diarrhoea remedies on the television is an indication of a growing problem. This is the fear of not being able to get to a toilet in time and having an “accident”.
Where Does a Fear of Incontinence Come From?
This fear often develops when a person actually has a problem getting to a toilet for some reason or another. The cause may be diarrhoea or some other stomach condition – like IBS. The person may have experienced an “accident” or just the fear of it ever happening.
How Much of a Disruption Can it Become?
Many people find this a difficult fear to discuss. It can get in the way of ones work and social life. The sufferer will sometimes obsess about knowing where the nearest toilet is and become obsessive about what stopping places there are on a long journey. Traffic jams may also become an issue and a fear of driving increases the disruption to the sufferers life. A fear of incontinence can become a fear of meetings, travelling, driving, holidays -
The Problem can Become a Solution
If the sufferer has never actually had an “accident” there may be a secondary gain to the condition. A secondary gain is a benefit that comes from the fear. For example, if the fear keeps a person from attending meetings, that may mean they get less work or they can avoid potential confrontational situations.
Hypnotherapy to Address a Fear of Incontinence
Hypnotherapy and NLP is used to help the sufferer to view the problem from a safer more realistic perspective. The hypnosis allows you to develop a new perspective that does not hold the fear that was programmed in by the original or previous experience. Hypnoanalysis may be used to determine any secondary gain and devise new strategies for its achievement. With the correct treatment a fear of “being taken short” can be overcome. Hypnotherapy and NLP can be used effectively to cure a fear of incontinence.
