Overcome a Fear of Flying Using Hypnosis - Mark’s Experience
One can experience fear in many circumstances. We sometimes link feelings of fear to specific circumstances or activities – if one frequently experiences fear while flying one will describe oneself as having a fear of flying or a flying phobia. In practice a fear of flying may come from any fear associated with or experienced within an aeroplane. It is not necessary to understand the exact source of a fear of flying to overcome it but sometimes, if the origin of the fear is not known, a possible source of the fear is discovered during treatment.
My client Mark (not his real name) came to me expressing a fear of flying. After treatment using Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) he wrote me the following email with a description of his experience:
Overcome a Fear of Flying - A Client's Personal Account
“On a flight a few years back I had some form of panic attack out of the blue which was a terrifying experience. At the time I convinced myself it was a fear of flying, as that is what I had subconsciously associated it with. Every flight after the event got worse and worse until I was prescribed Valium and cognitive therapy to deal with the fear. The panic attack experience returned at various inappropriate moments in high rise buildings, lifts, escalators and potholes.
“My decision to seek assistance to with the problem was the best action I took, as the Valium made me nauseous and left me exhausted for hours.
“Stephen is a very easy person to talk and relax with, in the first session he talked me quietly into a hypnotic state and we explored where the fear originated from. Without question it was surreal as I drifted back through the pages of my mind in search of these feelings. After a few moments I could see myself as a child trapped head first behind a bed - I had found the moment the fear was created. The moment itself was emotional and powerful, but through further exploration and assessment, whilst hypnotised, we reprogrammed the mind anchors causing the irrational fears and provided a mechanism to rationalise the feelings should they reappear.
“Three days after my second session I flew to Spain, with wife and son, without Valium and absolutely chuffed to bits. I even enjoyed the flight and we have one of the worst landings imaginable - but it was OK they've done hundreds of times before!
“The phobias we suffer are irrational, therefore the events that ours minds have us believe are fictional and will not come to fruition.”
