Debbie developed a fear of driving after a lorry collided with her and pushed her off the road. She was particularly frightened of corners and speed. This was particularly a problem in the dark and when it was raining. Debbie is probably required to do more night driving than most people because she is a shift worker. Debbie responded well to hypnotherapy. One morning, after a particularly bad overnight storm I received an email from Debbie. I have copied an extract below:
“Well since I last saw you I feel so much better within myself and my driving.
“I have actually started enjoying driving again. I'm working nights this week and as you know there was that lovely storm last night.
“This would normally fill me with a sick feeling of dread and blind panic about going home but.... last night when I left work at 0500 I felt fine. I planned which way I was going to go home, either on the Hogs Back or down the back roads… I opted for the back roads due to the road works along the Hogs Back. It was dark, was starting to get misty and there was so much water on the roads with sections of it that were flooded. I got to the top of the hill on the approach to the Hogs back … and there was a huge puddle to contend with, after turning right under the Hogs Back I got onto [a] hill… which seemed to be more like a waterfall and I felt in control and didn't panic.
“I just took it steady as I didn't know if the water was heading to another huge flood at the bottom but it didn't and I managed to go all through there at a steady 35 to 40mph allowing for the weather conditions and the road surfaces and managed to get home in one piece with my stress levels intact.
“I certainly would not have been able to do this if I had not come to see you!
“You have made me look at everything in a more positive light and I now see the accident as having been something which has made me much more aware of things and has made me take steps to become a better and more confident driver.
“You have addressed and resolved something in 4 sessions that it has taken me over 2 years to overcome and I wish I had come to you sooner and I can't thank you enough for what you have done.
“I will certainly recommend you to anyone who has any fears or phobias”
(Debbie is not my client’s real name and personal details have been removed from the email account. For those unfamiliar with the area involved: The Hogs Back is a 7 mile unlit stretch of the A31 between Guildford and Farnham in Surrey. It is known as a particularly treacherous road which attracts the extremes of the weather due to its exposed location and high elevation. Although the Hogs Back is dual carriageway, it is restricted to 60mph speed limit for most of its length.)
