Do You Try to Lose Weight but Really You Are Happy Being Fat?

To most people who are trying to lose weight, the thought that they are really happy being fat can appear bizarre but this is a serious consideration when one wants to control ones weight! Often the person does not consciously feel happy being fat but deep down there is a sense of comfort in being big. Being fat (big)can become a defence. This defensive use of fat can be broadly categorised as either the desire to be powerful or the desire to appear unattractive.

Bigger or Smaller – Happy Being Fat or Happier Thin?

The first category is easier to explain by giving an extreme example. Consider this! You are in a potentially violent situation; would you rather be six feet six inches tall and weighing 16 stone or five feet tall weighing seven stone? Hopefully, we do not find ourselves in violent situations very often but we all live in a hostile environment of sorts. There are plenty of things to make us feel the need to protect ourselves – from relationships to work issues. A layer of fat can take on the form of a protective layer of insulation from the world. Loss of that protective layer of fat can make one feel defenceless.

Attractive or Ugly – Which Is Most Desirable?

The second category generally only applies to women. One way to understand how being unattractive may be a form of defence is to look at another extreme example. I read a book once written by a woman who survived the German concentration camps of the Second World War. She said that the one thing the women did not want was to be regarded as attractive. In fact when they got lice and fleas they were extremely happy because it meant the guards would leave them alone.

How Much Do You Trust Yourself?

It is a common misconception that “fat” women are less attractive to men than thin women. If a woman wants to avoid the sexual interest of men, it is quite common for them to seek safety in fat. This fear of men does not have to come from fear of violence; it could equally come from a woman’s fear of her own inability to reject the sexual advance of any man other than her husband.

Use Hypnotherapy to Address the Issues that Keep You Overweight

Probably the best general defence we have in this world is to be as healthy mentally and physically as we can. If you want to control your weight, you have to look at the emotions that cause you to eat.  Hidden motives for becoming fat can cause comfort eating, overeating, binging and obsessing on things like sweets and chocolate. It may surprise you to know that chocolate doesn't make you fat - unless you are using it for comfort eating.

Using Hypnotherapy Stephen Rigby can assist you to take control of your weight and address any emotional issues, issues like a deep down feeling of "happy being fat”, that stand in your way.
