The Menopause
Has your doctor explained to you that the reason for your hot flushes is because you are entering the menopause? Many women on entering the menopause experience certain unpleasant symptoms. Hot flushes are probably the most widely known and these are experienced by 60 – 80% of women.
There are many other symptoms that menopausal women may experience. In addition to hot flushes about 80% of women will experience one or more of the following:
- Night Sweats
- Irritability
- Sleeplessness or interrupted sleep
- Low energy
- Mood swings
- Depression
- Loss of libido
Now that research has uncovered the increased risk of breast cancer, stroke and heart attacks associated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) women are looking for alternative ways to control their symptoms.
Science has now recognised the usefulness of hypnotherapy in the relief of menopausal symptoms. The realisation that hypnotherapy has a powerful contribution to make was demonstrated by research carried out by doctors in Canada. In an article entitled “Mind Control of Menopause” published in Women’s Health in 2003, it was reported that, in just four weeks, hypnosis significantly reduced the frequency, duration and severity of hot flushes. In addition, the hypnosis improved sleep, reduced insomnia and improved the women’s general quality of life.
The holistic approach of hypnotherapy can be effective in helping women deal with many of the physical and psychological symptoms of the menopause.
With increased life expectancy, it is estimated women spend up to a third of their life after the menopause. It is important that women realise that they can control their own body’s reaction to the menopause and emerge a more relaxed and motivated individual who is ideally placed to take advantage of this new exciting phase of her life.
