Hypnotherapy to Address PTSD

Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is a severe anxiety disorder which can develop following an incident of extreme emotional distress experienced personally or witnessed happening to another. Typically the trauma is due to the threat of death or threat to ones own or another’s psychological or sexual integrity.  PTSD can develop years after the sensitising experience.

If you feel you are suffering from PTSD seek medical assistance. Hypnotherapy can complement but not replace proper medical care.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

The symptoms experienced by someone suffering PTSD are many including all the symptoms of depression but there are three groups of symptoms that are characteristic of PTSD:

Those at risk from PTSD

We normally associate PTSD with members of the armed forces but any person who works in an occupation that can encounter traumatic experiences (e.g. Police, Fire Service, Paramedic etc.) are under increased risk as is any person who is involved in a serious car accident, physical attack (especially rape) or natural disaster.  Many people returned from their holidays with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after experiencing the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004.

Not a new treatment for PTSD

Hypnotherapy is not a new treatment for PTSD; in 1949 John Goodrich Watkins wrote a book “Hypnotherapy of War Neurosis” that documented his treatment of World War II veterans for PTSD using hypnosis. War Neurosis and Shell Shock are old names for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Back in the early 1900’s the condition was not recognised and many of the soldiers shot for cowardice and desertion during World War One were probably suffering from PTSD.
