“I would be so much happier if only I were a few pounds lighter”
– How many times have you heard someone say this?
Let’s get real! Take two people: one is regarded as clinically overweight and the other is thin. If it were true that ones weight determines ones mental state, the overweight person would be unhappier than the slim one. We are, however, talking real life. If we add some other conditions into the equation, then one can reach a totally different conclusion. Let’s say that the overweight person is a professional rugby player at the peak of his physical fitness doing the job that he loves and the thin person is dying of cancer!
What Makes Someone Overweight?
The truth is that, unless there is a medical issue, the reason for being overweight is overeating. You may offer an excuses like you can't stop eating because you love food so much but you are still overeating. Overeating may satisfy a hunger but not a hunger for food. It takes practice to be able to force food into a stomach that is saying “enough”! The most usual incentive to do this is to use food to satisfy an emotional need – comfort eating or trying to make oneself happier using food!
“If I were just a bit happier, I would be so much thinner!”
A more accurate “cause and effect” statement linking happiness and thinness is probably that if you could get happy you could get thin.
Happiness does not magically appear when one loses weight but frequently one cannot get thin until the issues preventing happiness are addressed.
