This is one of the more disabling phobias because it is very easy for the fear to spread to other areas. An emetophobic can become frightened of illness (people who are ill), drinking alcohol, eating certain foods, places where people congregate (such as shops and pubs), dental treatment or becoming pregnant. An emeotphobic can become fearful of any circumstance or place where they might get an upset stomach or see a person being sick.
Emetophobia is an extremely common phobia yet so many people have it without actually realising it is a phobia. It is quite common for a person to feel that they are the only one who suffers in this way.
Sufferers are more commonly women and have often developed a catalogue of measures to help them stop feeling nauseous; like carrying water or peppermints or some remedy for stomach upsets purchased from the chemist.
Everybody, at some period of their lives, have probably experienced a fear of being sick but it is a necessary and extremely effective mechanism that removes damaging substances from the stomach. The fear usually starts in childhood and gradually progresses from there. Oddly a person with emetophobia is rarely actually sick. It is often said that when an emetophobic is sick they lose their phobia but in my experience this is not the case (and treatment would never involve this).
Why is it difficult to address Emetophobia without specialist help?
Emetophobia often occurs after a bout of illness but the fear often persists because a deeper part of ones mind, the subconscious, perceives some benefit to having the condition. In technical terms this is called secondary gain. For example, in one of my clients we found that the emetophobia was an attempt by her subconscious to make her more confident.
