What is a Habit?
One might distinguish between two types of habitual behaviour. The first type, that includes things like being able to change gear without conscious thought, have obvious benefits and rarely need addressing. The second type, including things like nail biting or drinking too much, can be difficult to break. This second type of habit is characterised by three components.
Components of a Habit
All habits include something that initiates the habit, also referred to as the cue and a positive outcome, also referred to as the reward. The third, essential for a habit to exist, is an expectation of the reward. Often the sufferer does not recognise either the cue or the reward but all habits contain these three components. Recognising the specific components is often the key to breaking a habit.
When a Habit becomes a Compulsion
Locking the front door when leaving ones home becomes a habit very quickly and because we then do not use much conscious thought, we sometimes question whether we did it. Often there is sufficient conscious memory to answer the question but sometimes the lack of “evidence” produces anxiety which causes us to return to check. In those suffering from a compulsion or obsession (e.g. OCD), the switch that closes off the anxiety does not work and the anxiety increases no matter how many times one checks. Curing a compulsion or obsession requires learning how to shut off the mental switch.
