Hypnotherapy to cure Panic Attacks

Hypnotherapy, whether using formal hypnosis or informal hypnosis in the form of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), can help you control them. Panic attack is a generic term. It is a condition that is created by our own power of thought and this is why hypnosis can be such an effective cure. It is important to realise that everyone experiences panic attacks at one time or another. I have never met two people who experience them the same way. If you experience something that you identify as a panic attack,  you are completely normalit will not kill you and you are not going mad! You are perfectly normal.

Your body is overreacting

The phenomenon is caused by our body’s defence mechanism. Most of us learned in school about the “fight or flight” mechanism. The hormone adrenalin is pumped into us in response to a trigger for action. Unfortunately, the mechanism gets us into all sorts of trouble in our modern world because things can move a little too fast for this mechanism to keep up. For example, we experience a near miss while driving and when the danger has gone our hearts start beating frantically, our breathing is all over the place and we feel quite unwell (panic attack!). After a few minutes we are OK.

Everyone experiences panic attacks

The human body is a magnificent piece of engineering but sometimes it does have the odd blip. Most people experience the odd blip and think, “That was unpleasant. I wonder what that was all about?” and carry on making a subconscious note to go to the doctor if they experience it again in the near future.

Panic attack is just a label

The person who suffers “panic attacks” starts off experiencing an odd blip and instead of carrying on makes it worse by becoming fearful. They start to fear the fear much like a person who develops a phobia.  It could well be that the sufferer was experiencing some unrelated emotional stress at the time. The “fight or flight” hormone is released. If one was just about to score the winning touch down at Twickenham or rescue a drowning child one would be grateful for the surge of energy that the mechanism provides but if there is nowhere for it to go, it is an unpleasant experience. Some “kind” person labels you as having “panic attacks”; you think there is something wrong with you because you have an identifiable condition and your fear enables you to trigger more attacks.

Benefiting from panic attacks – secondary gain

If the first time a person experiences a panic attack there is a benefit derived – like someone showing them kindness or concern - this can increase the likelihood of them experiencing another panic attack; especially if the panic was brought on by an emotional upset. The process is called secondary gain. Unfortunately, secondary gain can create a vicious circle with the subconscious expecting certain benefits from panic attacks. If the benefits are not received, the subconscious just increases the frequency or severity of the attacks. Often these benefits are not understood at a conscious level but if it is secondary gain that is causing panic attacks to persist, they will never be controlled without the sufferer becoming aware of that secondary gain.
