Sam Gets Help with Emetophobia (Fear of Being Sick)
If you ever met Sam out socially you would probably be surprised to discover her occupation. It would be fair to say that she works on the front line of society where any kind of weakness could prove disastrous for ones own safety – and the safety of others. Unfortunately, Sam had such a weakness – she had a phobia, she was emetophobic and in Sam’s case that meant she not only had a fear of herself being sick but of anyone else around her doing the same.
Sam had suffered with a fear of being sick or of vomit in silence for years but had been able to manage her fear. Then an incident when on holiday had pushed her fear to something that had a serious impact on her social life, family life, work life and her health. Sam's manageable fear of being sick escallated to a full on phobia and she became emetophobic. Sam became frightened of any place where someone may be ill: fairgrounds, airplanes even places like pubs where people were drinking. Sam did not drink any more and could not go near people who had been drinking. Her emetophobia also influenced her eating; making her cautious of what and when she ate. Her emetophobia restricted her diet by making her avoid things like fatty foods or eating late in the evening. She often found herself lacking energy and her job required a lot of energy. Sam’s fear even extended to not being able to enter areas from which, if she started to feel ill, she would not be able to easily escape. This meant that enclosed places like shopping centres were out of bounds.
Sam’s work required that she be able to address any situation in any place - including drunks in shopping centres!
Sam required just two sessions of hypnotherapy to address her emetophobia. At the end of the first session of hypnotherapy she announced,
"All I want to do now is go down the shopping centre with my aunt!”
At the start of the second hypnotherapy session she confirmed her shopping trip and as part of her progress report declared,
"And I went out last Saturday night and got drunk – and I had chips on the way home!”
Six weeks after her second hypnotherapy appointment to address her emetophobia, in reply to a follow up email Sam wrote.
“Stephen
“Yes things have been fine since my last visit, friends and family have noticed a huge change in me and I’m able to do things with a lot more confidence now.
“I just don’t seem to worry anymore and I’ve even booked to go on holiday in June and I didn’t think I would ever be able to get on a plane again!
“Thank you for all your help, it has been greatly appreciated.
“All the best Sam”
