Hypnotherapy Psoriasis Treatment

Hypnotherapy has been found to be an effective alternative treatment for psoriasis. Hypnotherapy is a perfectly natural psoriasis treatment because its aim is to utilise the innate healing power of ones own mind and body.

Psoriasis is a non contagious skin condition. Its most common form, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, called scale. In 10 to 30% of sufferers the psoriasis can also present as psoriatic arthritis, which causes pain, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints.

The skin is the external barrier to our body. In order to maintain its protective function it is continually growing, as the older cells reach the surface they die and are sloughed off. When psoriasis occurs in the skin the cycle of cell growth is reduced from about a month to 3 to 4 days. The increased activity produces the characteristic redness with a white flaky build up of dead skin cells. It is believed that it is the immune system that is causing the effect by sending faulty signals.

Hypnotherapy, a Recommended Treatment for Psoriasis

Hypnotherapy can be effective as a treatment for psoriasis. This may be because of the link between Psoriasis and ones immune system and ones immune system and ones frame of mind; a link that is explored in the science of psychoneuroimmunology1.

The National Psoriasis Foundation, the American charitable body, states that hypnotherapy can be useful in the treatment of psoriasis2. They highlighted that hypnosis is a relaxation technique and stress is a well known as a trigger for psoriasis3.

Science points the way to Hypnotherapy Psoriasis Treatment

A small scale study carried out by Tausk and Whitmore at the St Johns Hopkins School of medicine in Baltimore revealed the potential use of hypnotherapy for the treatment of psoriasis. The study revealed that hypnotherapy improved the condition of a patient’s psoriasis. It concluded that the greater the depth of hypnosis the patient achieved (hypnotisability) the greater the improvement in their psoriasis4.

The Alternative Therapy View of How Hypnotherapy Works

The alternative view, utilised with treatment using hypnotherapy, is that psoriasis is caused by trapped emotion or an inappropriate release mechanism for emotion. The discovery of the emotional cause and development of an alternative method to release that emotion can control the psoriasis.
