What can Hypnotherapy be used to Address?
Back in 2003 MSN published an article on hypnotherapy and obtained from the British Hypnotherapy Association a list of problems that could be addressed using hypnotherapy. The article is, unfortunately, no longer available online but the list of problems that could be addressed using hypnotherapy was as follows:
Accident proneness, agoraphobia, alcoholism, allergies, amnesia, anxiety, anorexia, asthma, bed-wetting, blushing, car sickness, claustrophobia, compulsion, lack of confidence, depression, dithering, duodenal ulcers, dyslexia, exam nerves, failure syndrome, fear, frigidity, frustration, guilt, 'habit', hay fever, hoarding, hysterical paralysis, IBS, impotence, indecision, indigestion, inferiority feeling, infertility, inhibition, insomnia, kleptomania, learning difficulties, marital problems, meanness, bad memory, menstrual disorders, migraine, poor-mixing, nail-biting, nervousness, nervous skin disorders, nervous visual defects, neurasthenia, neurosis, neurotic choice of partner, nightmare, orgasmic inability, over-compliance, over-eating, panic, phobia, premature ejaculation, procrastination, psoriasis, psychosexual problems, quivering hands, rejection feelings, relationship problems, sea-sickness, self-consciousness, shyness, smoking, stage fright, stammering, tension, timidity, torticullis, nervous tremor, twitching, warts, worry.
All those problems highlighted are ones for which Stephen Rigby has been consulted and a few of them have links to specific pages on his website.
There have obviously been significant developments and research since this list was first created: such as the work in Canada that proved how effective hypnosis is in addressing hot flushes and the work done in Japan that showed that hypnosis doubling the effectiveness of IVF.
One might add to this list many times over as hypnotherapy can be effective in addressing:
- All fears and phobias; not just agoraphobia or claustrophobia
- All habitual behaviour: not just nail-biting. Stephen Rigby has, for example, found hypnotherapy useful to stop complaints such as trichotillomania (pulling ones hair out), binging and self harming
- Pain, both chronic, long term pain and to aid in painless child birth
- OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
- Bulimia and other eating disorders
- Menopausal problems
- Eczema
